Killurin Landfill
2003 to present
|
Design of a site extension, by landfill raising, and a closure plan for an existing unlined landfill. Restoration capping design and acting as the “Engineer” every summer now for 4 years is provided by Enviros. Each year sees the progressive restoration of the area brought to restoration level during the previous year.
Enviros provides a full service including Construction Quality Assurance.

Greater Manchester Waste Disposal Authority
Red Moss Landfill, Manchester, UK
1997 to 2003
|
Environmental Assessment of a recently closed municipal waste landfill. Advice to owners on remediation opportunity arising from funding and materials arising, from an adjacent sports and shopping development. Enviros provided all design and engineering work in respect of site remediation capping and restoration. Work included a vertical HDPE containment barrier placed on the site perimeter, and associated leachate collection, pre-treatment plant and a discharge main to a public sewer. Capping was by a novel use of peat materials and the site was then extensively planted. A landfill gas extraction system was designed and tendered by Enviros, and a generator installed which delivers power to the national grid. Revenue from the sale of the electricity provides funding for the maintenance of the system and of the woodland which is now becoming well established and provides a high value local amenity. Value of construction works approximately £1.5 million.

Corus (previously known as British Steel) Ravenscraig, Scotland, UK
1992 – and still in progress
|
Remediation of a large former steelworks. At approximately 400 Hectares, the Ravenscraig Steelworks was one of the largest industrial landholdings in Europe with a long and varied history of coal working, iron, and steelmaking. Its closure in 1992 left a legacy of environmental issues requiring remediation to facilitate development. Enviros was commissioned to identify post closure strategies for the management and long-term development of the site.
Significant quantities of contaminated waste materials were identified by Enviros, which were accurately located and characterised by extensive investigations. An Environmental Risk Assessment was undertaken by Enviros, which was followed by our design and full implementation of the recommended remedial measures, also under Enviros supervision.
Our work included design and construction of an on-site secure containment landfill facility, to minimize the risks prior to site development. The design includes the provision of a double composite landfill liner system.
A masterplan has been developed, and the site is now the focus for a major new property development area for the North Lanarkshire District. Enviros is now engaged to advise Corus on the proposed property development.

Highland Council, Scotland, Portree Landfill
1991 - 2004
|
A study into existing conditions at an existing landfill, located strategically on an island off the west coast of Scotland. The study included:-
- Assessment of the leachate problem and local watercourse pollution;
- Feasibility of an extension to the site;
- Preparation of a planning application, and local interest group consultation;
- Outline design of landfill extension;
- Detailed design of landfill extension, tender assessment, and contract supervision;
- Design, installation supervision, and commissioning of an SBR leachate treatment plant;
- Preparation, submission and negotiation of working plan and obtained a Licence to operate the site;
- Design of a Civic Amenity Waste Reception facility with a weighbridge, and recycling facilities. Enviros provided all tendering and procurement work, supervised construction, and trained the site staff.

Merseyside International Garden Festival
1989 - 2003
|
All technical landfill related consultancy provided to enable a dockside landfill tip to be capped and restored, the landfill gas extracted, and power generation installed, so that the site could then be used as the site for the acclaimed Merseyside International Garden Festival.
Enviros provided all consultancy services required for site investigation, landfill gas extraction, landfill gas migration control and utilization systems.
Site investigation included gas-pumping trials and this led to the design and installation of a multi-barrier gas management system. A rigorous construction quality assurance system was adopted And administered by Enviros, as once the festival park had been planted, no further access for any gas-barrier repair would be possible.
Enviros was then retained for the site environmental monitoring programme, and management of the landfill gas control and power generation system, including all liaison, supervision and monitoring of the Landfill Gas Design and Build Contractor’s performance. Value of construction works approximately £1.5 million.

Ballymacvea Landfill, Ballymena, Northern Ireland, UK 1999 - 2005
|
Investigation and assessment of the measures required to bring this landfill up to date with current Regulatory Authority requirements.
Airspace/void assessment and after-use proposals provided in an initial report, led to the re-contouring and capping of this site. Leachate perimeter drains, and a leachate collection system was designed by Enviros, and installed under our supervision.
An Enviros designed an SBR leachate treatment plant, which was installed under our supervision and commissioned. This plant successfully treated all the site leachate generated.
Finally, as restoration progressed so did the installation of a landfill gas extraction system, and a flaring system. Landfill gas power generation may be installed at a later date.

Environment Agency, UK, Government Guidance on the Design & Operation of Landfills
2000 - 2003
|
Enviros prepared the previous guidance dated 1995, to the UK Government. So when this needed updating to comply with the new landfill regulations Enviros was engaged to draft the revised document.
The project involved the review of EU and national legislation and standards and the preparation of new guidance to reflect these standards and current best practice.
