The Importance of a Municipal Waste Management Plan
Most developed countries have now recognised that as waste management has become such a politically sensitive topic, and as the whole subject has become so much more complex, the formulation of a regularly updated waste management plan is a vital step toward achieving real improvements.
Many Indian municipalities have realised this, although there is no legal requirement for each municipality to prepare a waste plan.
For example Delhi is now implementing investment in many areas of waste management infrastructure as a result of waste plans prepared by local and international consultants in close collaboration with commissioners, and then incorporated into policy making decisions.
Consultation with the public, undertaken during the planning stage is very important in developing these plans. It is never easy to reach consensus. However, without a well developed strategy, and the involvement of the community, resulting in an agreed plan; many projects will stumble or fail under scrutiny.
We suggest that decision makers, might read the UNEP guide described in the panel below.
At Enviros Consulting we have been preparing Waste Management Plans for Municipal Authorities many years, and we have listed examples here.
If you are a commissioner and you would like us to contact you to discuss how we might work with local Indian partners to prepare a Waste Management Plan for your municipality, with the benefit of international expertise, then we would be pleased to receive your email. Please contact us here.
